You have most likely heard of Operation Paperclip. At the end of the second World War, U.S intelligence agencies brought around 500 former Nazi scientists to work for us, here in the United States, developing a multitude of war technology for our government. You can read about that here.
Operation Mockingbird is the code name of a far more devious project implemented by the CIA in the 1950’s aimed at influencing and controlling media. In 1948 a man named Frank Wisner was appointed as director for the CIA’s Official Special Projects (OSP). Later, it was renamed the Office of Policy Coordination and became the intelligence agency’s branch dedicated to covert action. Frank Wisner was told to create an organization that was focused on propaganda, economic warfare, subversion, and sabotage.
This may be the exact moment in history when our own government decided to use warfare strategies against their own people at home. Why would the secret intelligence agency need to control media if it was not aimed at controlling the public?
Congress published a report on this situation in 1976, in which they stated:
The CIA currently maintains a network of several hundred foreign individuals around the world who provide intelligence for the CIA and at times attempt to influence opinion through the use of covert propaganda. These individuals provide the CIA with direct access to a large number of newspapers and periodicals, scores of press services and news agencies, radio and television stations, commercial book publishers, and other foreign media outlets
By the early 1950s, Frank Wisner had recruited several members of different media outlets and had in his pocket several respected members of the New York Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post and others. Now many people believe that this all ended back in the 60s and 70s, but there are a lot of individuals (myself included) that believe that this operation is still very much active and currently engaged today.
There are those out there who will argue that this is not even real, that is all a conspiracy theory, regardless of the fact that there are records that exist of investigations that were done by authorities when this operation came to light. I don’t know about you, but when I watch TV shows on cable, or see certain ads or news stories I just feel like someone is attempting to manipulated me and mold my opinion to suit their desires. They don’t call it TV programming for nothing…they are programming your brain while you stare mindlessly at the screen being “entertained”.
